Its a Wonderful Weald (Reboot)

Description

110km cycling event starting from Hailsham. Controls at Hailsham: Freedom Leisure., plus 4 information controls.

This is the resumption of Chris Tracey's original 'It’s a Wonderful Weald' ride from several years ago. Chris will be helping at the Winchelsea feed.

No entries on the line.

There will be a feed in Winchelsea and at the finish. All food is included in the price and includes the expected hot or cold drinks, sandwiches, my wife's homemade cakes, rice pudding and peaches.

Final Welcome Letter, Route sheet and GPX track will be available the week before the event following final checking.

A ride taking in the levels near Hailsham, Rye and Appledore with climbs to Fairlight and more after leaving the Military Road near Appledore, plus more climbs in the High Weld AONB.

Hailsham to Winchelsea (43km): Leaving Hailsham we travel South on the levels towards Peveney and Cooden Beach before we join CR2 through and beyond Hastings. Continuing to follow CR2 we are soon climbing out of Hasting on Barley Lane to avoid the main road to Fairlight and the start of the High Weald AONB. A descent from Fairlight on the Peter James Lane will soon see us arrive in Pett for the first INFO control. After Pett we shortly arrive in Winchelsea for a feed.

Winchelsea to Sandhust (32km): From Winchelsea we continue toward Winchelsea Station before the climb of Dumb Woman's Lane* towards Udimore and our second INFO control. After descending into, and skirting around Rye, we are soon on the Military Road, before the climb to third INFO control on Knock Hill before continuing towards Wittersham, and more of the High Weald AONB. After arriving in Rolvenden Layne we join Frogs Lane before a very short section on a main road, before we are soon back on the quiet Alder Lane and other country lanes, passing several Hop fields, before arriving at our next INFO control in Sandhurst.

Sandhurst to Hailsham (35km): After Sandhurst we start our return journey back to Hailsham, passing through Bodium, Salehurst and Robertsbridge. From Robertsbridge we head through Brightling and Bodle Street before leaving the High Weald AONB, arriving back in Hailsham.

* Dumb Woman's Lane named either because a mute lady sold natural remedies lived on it in the 1800's or another lady, who lived there, had her tongue removed by smugglers after she reported them in the 1700s.
