Description

A challenging but stunning route into some remote areas of Wales with beautiful countryside, lakes and reservoirs. Not impossible for a first 200km but ideally for randonneurs with some experience.
From the start at Abbey Foregate Car Park in the shadow of Shrewsbury Abbey, through the medieval town centre, crossing the River Severn three times, you take on the generally flat route out to the first control Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant.

Soon after, the ascents begin including the Milltir Gerrig climb after which you are rewarded with a long (mostly) descent into Bala. Enjoy the shops and cafes and refill your bottles and take on some snacks.

Trawfynydd is the next control where you can stock up again at the Prysor garage before the truly spectacular gated road back to the south-western end of Bala Lake.

The 8.5km climb from Bala Lake takes you to the top of the Bwlch y Groes. After a descent to Lake Vyrnwy you cross the dam reach Dafarn Newydd Stores, Abertridwr a classic control in Audax circles.

A shortish climb and then it is mainly descending to Four Crosses and a flat run back to Shrewsbury via one info control at Cruckton near the finish.

A 7.30am start to maximise daylight.

The route is remote in some places with no mobile phone signal.
