Description

An iconic classic 200km event. The Tour of the Berwyns has been in the Audax UK calendar for over 30 years for a reason, it's enduring appeal is due to the sheer beauty of the route.
The longstanding, definitive central section from Pen-y-Cae to Chirk is a non stop feast for the eyes and is some of the best views North Wales has to offer. The Llangollen Panorama is a vista I never tire of, overlooking Llangollen and the River Dee from high up on the limestone escarpment, made even better by a free cake stop. Next the route passes by the Llangollen Horseshoe Waterfall and leads to my favourite part of the route, between Rhewl and Carrog is a single track road, following the other side of the river with several ancient trees, during May there are massive drifts of bluebells that really have to be seen to believed. Into Corwen to control before heading of to the Berwyn Mountains. The Berwyns are a remote mountain moorland that is sparsely populated and rarely visited compared to the nearby mountain ranges in Snowdonia National Park. The 8km uphill to the top of Milltir Cerrig mountain pass will give you chance to savour a landscape that has hardly changed over the centuries. You are rewarded with a super fast 8km descent into the Tanat valley before getting to the control at Llanrhaeadyr-ym-Mochnant. From here it's back uphill passing some remote farmland before cresting at the very top of the Glyn Cieriog Valley which means more than 20km downhill to Chirk, your heightened senses mean that you really notice the sections of wild garlic which you pass through. The route to and from this central section is mainly beautiful Cheshire lanes, making a continuously interesting 200km that is hard to be beaten. There are free AAA points for all finishers indicating some climbing, but remember, for every uphill there is a thrilling downhill to compensate! Free refreshment before and after the event included in the entry. E-Brevet and GPS available.
