Velofondista 200

Description

204km cycling event starting from Velofondista, Slaithwaite, West Yorkshire. Controls at Whalley (Co-Op), Eccleston (Sainsburys), Springhead (Raja Bros Convenience Store) and Velofondista., plus 5 information controls.

This ride has everything: exposed moorland hills, views, reservoirs, bridges, tunnels, rolling B-roads, city centre and a trip to the National Cycling Centre and 10km dowhill to the finish.

I've been longing to create an audax here in Slaithwaite and give my fellow randonneurs a chance to see some of the riding I am enjoying here in West Yorkshire and Lancashire. We start with 40km of steep climbs and big moorland views, before 120km of rolling roads with a constant supply of places to find refreshments. I had a goal of coming back through Manchester because it must be possible surely? And it is... Mike Wigley and I found a wonderful ride back past Old Trafford, the Etihad stadium and the home of British Cycling, the National Cycling Centre. The ride is named after the bicycle maintenance shop here in Slaithwaite: Velofondista, where Jen runs a wonderful service. I do hope that this ride will appeal to women randonneurs - I've tried to think through some of the feedback I've had on other events which would make an audax better for women. I've created a blog for the event which I'll populate with photos and a description of what's happening.
